The playful monk is a vessel persona which holds both the "conservative/ Confucianist" and "ambitious childlike" qualities of myself. The garment form is inspired by the Han-bok and the robe consists of laser engraved patterns designed by a recording of a singing bowl converted into a visual product. The robe encapsulates three Korean terms: 의식(rituals), 기도(prayers),
and 수련(practices).
METAMORPHIC LANDSCAPES explores artistic transformation of natural materials and environments, where artists weave their surroundings into narratives using materials as metaphors, ultimately reshaping our perception of evolving landscapes.
"Playful Monk" is a dynamic art piece that blends traditional Korean garment design with contemporary narratives, reflecting the artist's evolving identity. The artist uses the robe to express the duality of her character, juxtaposing conservative and playful elements through materials like plastic wraps and ink-infused rubber. This garment embodies a mix of spirituality and materiality.
In "Divergent Realities," the robe illustrates how technology and media reshape our understanding of reality and artistic labor. The pattern on the robe was created by converting singing bowl recordings into visual images using Audacity and Photoshop. This process ties together personal and cultural heritage, with the final patterns being laser engraved onto the fabric.
By integrating traditional Korean garments like the Hanbok with modern design, the artist explores her identity, linking past and present. The exhibition also revisits the piece digitally, using 3D images and virtual displays to present "Playful Monk" without a physical body. This emphasizes the fluidity between physical and virtual realms, showcasing the continuous evolution of artistic expression through technology.
