Divergent Realities

The body extension acts as a transformative element, affecting the surrounding atmosphere through the interaction of light and shadow. This project uses motion to extend the reach of shadows, producing an atmosphere characterized by the dynamic interaction of light and shadow.
Because of the adaptability of its pieces, which are constantly in flux, the distinction between this atmospheric entity and existing space fades. This extension, like the shifting shadows created by a tree “nature” outside a window, calls into question the separation between its realm and the room it occupies.   Each component, made of reflective metal panels, clear plexiglass, and light-absorbing white paper, interacts differently with incoming light. Specifically, three adjustable parts give the body control over this atmospheric interaction: a cap that can move vertically and laterally to hold the light source; a central ring that can rotate and tilt to create different silhouettes; and metal hinges on the inner panels that let the body change the environment even more.

This revolutionary extension of the body not only changes the surrounding environment, but it also gives its inhabitant agency, encouraging a dynamic and interactive relationship with the overlapping shades and illumination.

METAMORPHIC LANDSCAPES explores artistic transformation of natural materials and environments, where artists weave their surroundings into narratives using materials as metaphors, ultimately reshaping our perception of evolving landscapes.

Her innovative use of reflective metal panels, clear plexiglass, and light-absorbing white paper highlights the theme of divergent realities. Each material reacts uniquely with light, producing a multifaceted experience that blurs the lines between different realms. The adjustable components—such as the cap, central ring, and metal hinges—allow for control over the environment, enabling the body to interact dynamically with light and shadow. This capability not only transforms the space but also empowers the inhabitant, fostering a deep engagement with the interplay of illumination and shade.

Nam's work is particularly compelling in how it questions and redefines the separation between its realm and the room it occupies. By creating a transformative and interactive atmosphere, her project embodies the essence of divergent realities, demonstrating how our perceptions and experiences are continuously shaped by the elements around.
