Divergent Realities

Through collaboration, Seo Young Kim and Lumin Kim aimed to infuse modern interpretations with the essence of Korean heritage, weaving a narrative that honors our shared cultural roots while offering fresh perspectives for contemporary audiences to appreciate.

Jogakbo, the Korean patchwork tradition, serves as the muse for their work. They blend assorted fabrics in a manner that evokes both traditional charm and contemporary arrangement with simplicity, offering a modern interpretation while respecting its heritage. Light bulbs with warm colors were added to give a warm, cozy atmosphere to the viewers.

METAMORPHIC LANDSCAPES explores artistic transformation of natural materials and environments, where artists weave their surroundings into narratives using materials as metaphors, ultimately reshaping our perception of evolving landscapes.

By blending assorted fabrics in a manner that honors Korean heritage while infusing modern interpretations, they create pieces that capture the ever-changing nature of surroundings and personal experiences. Their work symbolizes the dynamic interplay between tradition and contemporary life, illustrating life's transformative phases.

The use of Jogakbo as their muse is particularly fitting for this theme. Jogakbo, a traditional Korean patchwork technique, inherently represents transformation and evolution. Each piece of fabric, once part of a different whole, is brought together to form a new, cohesive entity. This process mirrors the way personal and collective histories are interwoven, constantly evolving into new forms. By presenting these fabrics in a modern arrangement, Seoyoung Kim and Lumin Kim invite viewers to reflect on the continuity and change in their own lives.

The addition of warm-colored light bulbs enhances this reflective atmosphere, creating a cozy, inviting space for contemplation. The warm light not only adds a sense of comfort but also symbolizes enlightenment and the illumination of personal and cultural narratives. It transforms the space, making it a haven for introspection and connection.

Seo Young Kim and Lumin Kim's work embodies the essence of metamorphic landscapes by using traditional materials to explore contemporary themes. Their pieces evoke a sense of nostalgia while simultaneously offering fresh perspectives, encouraging viewers to appreciate the interconnectedness of past and present. Through their art, they illustrate how personal and cultural evolution is a continuous journey, marked by moments of transformation and renewal.
